People with Special Needs
Following Hurricane Charley, the City of Sanibel determined a need to address citizens with special needs. A protocol was established to assist the Lee County Emergency Management in identifying and registering the Special Needs population on Sanibel. Special Needs is defined as individuals in the community with physical, mental, or medical care needs who may require assistance before, during, and/or after a disaster or emergency, when their usual resources and support network fail. This would include:
- Sensory disabilities, such as reduction or loss in sight and hearing.
- Mobility disabilities, such as use of wheelchair or cane.
- Mental disabilities, such as persons who are mentally ill or developmentally disabled, and those with traumatic brain injury or learning disabilities.
- Other medical conditions, such as renal dialysis, diabetes, or lung diseases requiring oxygen.
The Emergency Management Division serves as a conduit for Lee County’s existing Special Needs Program. The City of Sanibel is committed to continuing to assist by providing the following services:
Advertisements- Local press releases in an attempt to notify the public of the City of Sanibel’s Special Needs Registration Program.
Special caregivers- Contact with those organizations that assist individuals with special needs, to include pharmacists, home health care specialists, and doctors.
Faith-Based Organizations - Meetings with faith-based organizations on Sanibel.
Sanibel Registration Process- Assist Sanibel residents by going to their homes to provide assistance in registering individuals with special needs.
Sanibel Special Needs Population Database- The Emergency Management Division maintains a local special needs database. The database is used in the event of a pending severe weather alert so contact can be made with our special needs population to verify their safety and needs and to make arrangements as required for their evacuation.
